The Fuze An Online Rock Journal - Album review Playing With Fire - USA

Dave Kilminster ’Äì Playing With Fire (2004)
By The Fuze

Recorded live in the studio in a single evening in 1996, ’ÄòPlaying With Fire’Äô is an eyebrow-raising acoustic showcase for Dave Kilminster and Fraser Thorneycroft-Smith. Kilminster is best known for his work with prog-rock legends Keith Emerson and John Wetton, but his playing here couldn’Äôt be further from the relative excess of those two gentlemen. ’ÄòPlaying With Fire’Äô is a contemplative (as in ’ÄúJapan’Äù, complete with its acoustic guitar recreation of a sitar!), sometimes unorthodox example of the synergy that musicians can share. At times, it brings to mind King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp’Äôs League of Crafty Guitarists releases, while retaining an accessibility that those albums tend to lack. This album will make great background music ’Äì until you start picking up on the interplay between the two guitarist, at which point you’Äôll want to break out the headphones and lose yourself in it.
